Obituary of Miriam Esmada Grant
Miriam Esmada Grant passed away peacefully on Monday, October 9, 2023, in Toronto, Canada. Miriam was born August 7, 1953, with her twin brother Author Brown, to the late Leana Lucilda Brown and Fritzbert Brown in Freetown, Clarendon, Jamaica, and was the youngest of eight children. She studied Business Administration at the Jamaica Commercial Institute, Kingston Campus.
In 1974, Miriam immigrated to Toronto, Canada, to continue her career by working 25 years for Customs and Excise Canada for the Canadian Federal Government, and another 10 years in the corporate sector. She also continued her studies in Business Management at York University and later furthered her studies at George Brown College in Computer Information Systems. Shortly after arriving in Toronto, Miriam met the love of her life, Wesley Beresford Grant of St. James, Montego Bay, Jamaica. They were married on August 28, 1976. Together, they were blessed with two sons and one daughter.
Miriam loved being with her family and celebrating any special day or event. She enjoyed raising her kids and attending their sports and special occasions. Even later in her life, Miriam was always traveling to spend time with and celebrate her children and grandchildren, to cherish the special moments. She was especially excited to welcome four grandsons and one granddaughter to her life and loved to call, text, spend time with them, and cook their favorite authentic Jamaican cuisine.
Not only did Miriam cherish her family, but she also decided at an early age to accept Jesus Christ and dedicate her life to him. Miriam served and loved God with all her heart, mind, and soul. She lived a life of transformed grace. Every person who knew her was witness to the transformative power of Jesus Christ in her. She lived a servant's life and modeled a servant's heart. She loved on people with hugs and kisses and smiles. She called them, spoke a word to them, or prayed for them. She fed into their lives. She pointed them all to Jesus.
She opened her house to missionaries, family members, and dropped everything to attend to those who were in need and could not help themselves. Many times, she lovingly and patiently sat with people and prayed over them. She had an infectious laugh and carefree spirit that we will never forget and a heart to encourage and pray for all of us. She truly loved the way Christ loves. And for many of us, she was the closest example of Christ's unconditional love for us all.
She is truly missed by family and friends near and far. The family appreciates your prayers and kind gestures during this difficult time. Though we mourn the loss of Miriam Esmada Grant, we find comfort in celebrating a mighty woman of faith who devoted her life to serving God and family and knowing that she will forever remain alive in our hearts and memories.
Miriam was preceded in her passing by her parents, twin brother Author Brown, sister Mervis Brown-Anderson, brother Ezra Newell, and sister Florette Cummings and is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Wesley Grant; wonderful children, Kevin Grant and Tatyana Grant of Dallas, Texas, Jeffery Grant and wife Erica Grant of Savannah, Georgia, and Tiffany Grant of Canada; grandchildren, Wesley Grant, Aaron Grant, Ethan Grant, Jeffery Grant II, and Victoria Grant; her brother Bertie Brown of Canada; sisters Eulalee Thompson and Ethel Wright of Canada; and a host of many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
