Dear Stephanie, Winston, and Ellie,
I have struggled to find words that would adequately honour Jaden’s life and bring comfort and peace to your hearts, even for a moment. I cannot. I can only offer my heartfelt, deepest condolences, love & prayers, along with these few memories.
Jaden was a student at Faith Academy School during his elementary years. I interacted with him first as his teacher, and later as principal. From the very beginning he made an impression. He was quiet and observant, taking everything in. I watched as he mingled with the other students. He was friendly and kind to everyone, but selective in who he chose to spend free time with.
Of course, as staff members, we were all made aware of Jaden’s health challenges. He never wanted or expected to be treated differently than any other student. He was independent and involved in every activity. He played hard and was competitive, all while showing kindness and compassion to everyone. It was Jaden himself who informed his fellow students of his health challenges seeking to educate them. He brought in a book about Sickle Cell and requested that I read it to the class during Carpet Time. Afterwards he seated himself in the “big rocking chair”, crossed one little leg over his knee, like a big man, and competently answered all of the children’s questions and concerns.
I recall the first time Jaden had an “episode” while at school. He waited until class had been dismissed for lunch, then quietly approached my desk. I saw the pain on his face and knew. I called his mom, and asked if he wanted to lie down while waiting for her to arrive. He shook his head, and continued to stand in front of me. I picked him up, wrapped him in his blanket, and placed him onto my lap. He snuggled in. We dimmed the lights, played classical music softly, and waited. There was no conversation. Jaden was focused on managing the pain with breathing exercises, and I was focused on my silent prayers for this courageous, strong, dignified young man, all of four years old. This became our routine whenever he had a sickle cell incident.
Jaden was this endearing combination of an active, fun-loving, little boy while being an old soul with a dry wit. He built a special bond with my mother-in-law, Margherita McKenzie, the founder and principal of the school. He would venture into her office, sit crossed legged in one of the chairs at the desk and they would have conversations, always making her laugh. She had health challenges too, and quietly endured pain. They respected each other on a level that could only be fully appreciated by those fighting a similar battle. He was her hero. When she passed away in 2013, Jaden paid tribute to her on behalf of Faith Academy. This small boy stood before hundreds of people, and spoke clearly and eloquently bringing the crowd to its feet in a standing ovation.
And so today I’m experiencing one of those rare, beautiful and poignant full circle moments. Those moments that impact you forever. It would seem that Jaden’s life was cut short, but that’s not so. God makes no mistakes. Jaden completed his assignment. He lived and loved more deeply, and gave of himself more generously in his twenty years, than many have in a life decades longer. Thank you Stephanie and Winston for raising such a remarkable human being. There’s so much I could say about you, but I don’t need to because Jaden’s character and his life speak clearly, about the extraordinary, loving people and parents you are. I honour you both today and although nothing I can say can take away your heartache, I hope you find comfort in the fact that you loved Jaden completely and unselfishly. It would have been so easy to coddle him, but you loved him enough to allow him to be free to pursue his dreams, overcome obstacles, celebrate milestones, and live a productive , joy filled young life. Your love enabled him to soar. So continue on Jaden. Take your flight. From here throughout eternity, you will be whole, painless and safe in the arms of Jesus. We here, we will continue to be touched by your life and comforted by your memory. You will always, always be loved.
Rhonda McKenzie

A very lovely, thoughtful, comforting tribute from one very caring human being to a very caring family experiencing a time of great sorrow...although my interactions with Jaden was limited while assisting Grandma Chikki with the daycare and school lunches I became intimately aware of his struggles but watch with great admiration as he fought bravely to manage his discomfort and witness the love and care he received from his parents and those around him...I am convinced that he fought good fight.

Winston aka Phophet & Stephanie. We have struggled to find the right words to say to you both at this sad time which would ease the pain which you are both feeling inside right now.
Sometimes in grief we feel there are no words that will comfort us when we lose our loved ones.
With TIME we hope the whole family can find peace and comfort not forgetting the love and all the great memories Jaden shared throughout life.
Love from your family on the other side of the pond England UK.

My heart hurts every time I think of your passing. Words cannot express how deeply saddened I am of your passing. However, when I look at your beautiful smile in it there is hope that your passing is not in vain and that out of evil will come good. Although your life was cut short here on earth, you were a force to be reckoned with as you have put so many people to shame because of how much you have accomplished while battling your illness. You never gave up. You were such a tower of strength and that is the legacy myself, (your aunt Christine)your friends and family members will bank on for the rest of our lives. Every time I think of you I will remember how resilient you were and that will help me to make sense of your sudden passing. SIP my amazing nephew Jaden!!

My condolences on your loss. Words can’t accurately describe the emptiness the loss a child brings. However, weeping we may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning. May the God of all comfort garrison your hearts through the days, weeks, months and years that lies ahead. Be bless.
