I first met Owen, a fellow Bajan, in 1975 when I came to Canada from the UK. Over the years, we shared a common interest in organizing around social justice issues. I have been personally touched by Owen during his lifetime as I am now touched by his passing. May Sankara's spirit find peace with the ancestors.

I knew Owen Leach for many decades and he has demonstrated his commitment to the revolutionary struggle for the total liberation of Africa and African people globally. We can be comforted knowing that he has transitioned to be with his ancestors who receive him with much joy and merriment. The struggle continues. Forward ever backward never.

To Owen's Family: Blessings and Love to you as you celebrate the life of this incredible person who extended his love to all. He, indeed, seemed to turn up just when he was needed and was generous to a fault. May he certainly rest in peace and celebrate, as he transitions to continue his journey. One love, Amah Harris

So Sankara and Otis, I knew them as BIM and BAM, really. So saw him regularly because of that. When Norman would need any help he would magically appear when there was no one else. One found story I have I want to share is a time where Norman’s apartment needed to fumigated for Bed Bugs which is normal for anyone who lives in a building in Downtown Toronto and one time or another and after had to get rid of a mattress. I couldn’t get it in time to the dumb at all. But in comes Owen with his angel wings, and says don’t worry I know a place where we can dump it, so next thing you know its myself and uncle Owen dumping this mattress and making a quick get away.
I will remember that experience with him fondly. And give thanks for it. And Give thanks to his life. Send my love to all to Cushion the whole family during this time of mourning of his transition.

Owen loved sharing memories of the struggle in Toronto. He did so to teach and to remind us not to repeat history...something about which another Bajan stalwart, Kamau Brathwaite, reminded us.
The kindness that Owen showered on members of our community won him well-deserved laurels. In particular, he was supportive of the young, and the elderly. At the same time, he was a family man, mindful of his particular family, and his extended family. He will be remembered with love.

My sincere condolences to Aunt Marjorie, Marlon and Fayola over the passing of Uncle Owen. Although we are sad about his death, we are grateful for the 85 years he had with all of us in this life. Uncle Owen was a very passionate man who dedicated his life to helping others, his family and many, many people who were less fortunate and in desperate need of justice. Uncle Owen will be missed by all of us, but his life and love of people should inspire us to continue his legacy of helping others.
Rest in peace, Uncle Owen.

My deepest condolences to Owen's family. He was a great inspiration to me as a youth of colour. Back in the '80s, many anti-racist and progressive events took place that I remember Brother Owen being a part of! May there be light on his path!

My condolences to Marlon, Fayola & Aunt Marge and family. My most vivid memory of Uncle Owen was when he was visiting our family in Montreal about 40+ years ago. We went to a shopping mall and the song "Rock the Boat" was playing overhead in a department store. With his unique laugh and voice, he expressed how much he loved that song... and there he was....grooving to the song in the store! Anytime I hear that song, I remember Uncle Owen. You were full of life and enthusiasm.
Such a leader and inspiration to others and will be missed. May you rest in peace and find some boats to Rock!

Sincere regret that Brother Owen has left us to join the ancestors. A passionate supporter and volunteer in the Black communities for many decades, his footprints are all over this place. We did not say thank you enough while you were here because so many in our communities have no idea how wonderful you are and how much of the enefits they take for granted you helped to shape. Rest In Eternal Peace my Brother, several angels are awaiting your arrival. WALK GOOD!

I am sincerely saddened at Owen's passing. My family sends condolences to his family from out here in western Canada -- British Columbia. Owen has been on my radar since I landed in Toronto 1979. I have had the privilege of being in his company, writing and interviewing him in many of his activities -- politics and otherwise. We have shared space at numerous Caribana meetings at the Public Library on Queen Street in Parkdale. My spouse still speaks of his ability to get around busy Toronto streets during rush hours and get us to the airport in time to catch our flight back home.
Owen has joined the ancestors. We know he will continue his works with them up there.

Although I never met Owen, in person, the brilliance and beauty of his life, his activism, his honour, are sketched in my heart, forever. He is an inspired legend to be forever remembered and cherished, and God Knows, Emulated. Taken away now, when he is so desperately needed in these times. His spirit lives on, and his spirit must inspire all of us to continue to walk his path.
With profound love and gratitude to his memory. RIP in the warmth and peace that you so deserve Dear Owen.

Sincere condolences to Fayola, Marlon, Marjorie, Rizon & Asher from an old friend and comrade of Owen "Sankara" Leach. I was honored to work on his two campaigns for City Council in the 1980s. I am posting an article from the Canadian Tribune that was published during his 1985 campaign for Alderman - a strong and spirited campaign in which he finished second. Owen was always a fighter on behalf of the oppressed. On top of that, he was a beautiful person: kind and compassionate yes, but intolerant of B.S. when it was covering up injustice. I will always smile when I think of him.

Rest in power, Owen Sankara Leach. You are one of the most humble, compassionate, insightful, and committed-to-struggle people I have ever known. You beat a lot of odds to make it to 85 and we are all better for that. The world has lost a shining star but the stardust of the universe is shining ever more brightly.
My deep condolences to both of you Fayola and Marlon, whom I remember so fondly from when you were still small children. And of course condolences to Owen's grands and his sister, and the huge community who treasure you always.
I am posting this quote from Che for you, Owen, because you have always been One Dedicated Revolutionary Guided by Feelings of Love for the Oppressed of Humanity and by Respect for All Peoples. You will always be alive in so many memories among all the people whose lives you touched in a beautiful way.
